Exploring Allenwood Farm's History
Where is Allenwood Farm?
Allenwood Farm is found on the western edge of Plainfield village. It sits on the north side of Route 2. The farm is just east of where Route 2 meets Vermont Route 214.
What Does the Farm Look Like?
Today, the farm property is about 2.5 acres (1 hectare). It has gentle, rolling fields. These fields surround the main farm buildings. The farm complex includes a farmhouse, two barns, and a few smaller buildings.
The Farmhouse Details
The main farmhouse is close to the road. It's hidden a bit by thick hedges. This house is made of brick and has 1-1/2 stories. It's built in a style called "Cape." The house has a roof that slopes down on the sides.
The windows have a Greek Revival design. The front door also shows Greek Revival style. Above the door, there's a flat, decorative piece called a frieze. This frieze is in the Federal style. Inside, the house still has much of its original wooden details.
The Barns and Outbuildings
To the northwest of the house are two barns. These barns were built in the 1800s. One of them might even be older than the main house itself! There are also other small buildings on the property.
Who Built Allenwood Farm?
The land for Allenwood Farm was first bought around 1800. It was purchased by Jesse Martin. Jesse Martin was a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. His son, Allen Martin, built the brick farmhouse in 1827.
The farm has stayed in the Martin family ever since. There might have been an even older log cabin on the property. This cabin was known as "Allen's Cottage." Jesse Martin lived there during his last years.
Allen Martin's grandnephew was Willard S. Martin, Jr. He was a very successful businessman. He built a large estate called Greatwood. This estate was west of Allenwood Farm. Today, Greatwood is part of the Goddard College Greatwood Campus.
