The Allocasuarina drummondiana has an interesting history. It was first described in 1848. A botanist named Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel gave it the name Casuarina drummondiana. He wrote about it in his work, Revisio critica Casuarinarum.

Later, in 1982, another botanist changed its name. Lawrence Alexander Sidney Johnson reclassified it into the Allocasuarina group. This happened during his work on sheoaks, which he published in the Journal of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.
