Allsvenskan is a super exciting handball league for men in Sweden. It's like the second-highest level of handball in the country. Imagine it as a stepping stone for teams hoping to reach the very top!
A long time ago, from 1934 to 1990, the name Allsvenskan was actually used for the top handball league. But now, it's the second division. The Swedish Handball Federation helps organize all the games and makes sure everything runs smoothly.
How the League Works
Since the 2007-08 season, the league has followed the same rules. There are 14 teams in Allsvenskan. Each team plays every other team twice. This means they play one game at home and one game away. This adds up to 26 games for each team!
The team that finishes first in Allsvenskan gets a big prize. They are promoted directly to the Handbollsligan. This is the highest handball league in Sweden.
Teams that finish 2nd, 3rd, and 4th get another chance. They play in special qualification games. These games are against teams from the Handbollsligan. It's their chance to try and move up to the top league too.
At the bottom of the league, things are different. The two teams that finish last are moved down to Division 1. This is a lower league. The teams in 12th and 13th place also play special games. These are to decide if they stay in Allsvenskan or move down.
