Alma Fairfax Carlisle, born Alma Fairfax Murray on July 9, 1927, is an American architect. She is also an architectural historian. She worked in Los Angeles, California. Her important work helped save many old and special places in the city. These places are called historic districts and sites.

Early Life and Education

Alma Carlisle was born on July 9, 1927. She grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. When she was in high school, she became very interested in buildings. She also loved learning about the history of buildings. Her family, especially her father, worked with real estate. They encouraged her interest in architecture.

In 1950, Alma Carlisle finished college. She graduated from Howard University. She earned a degree in architecture. She graduated with cum laude, which means she had excellent grades.

Moving to Los Angeles

Alma Murray married David Kay Carlisle on July 28, 1953. They had three children together. For many years, in the 1950s and 1960s, she was a homemaker. In 1975, Alma and her family moved to Los Angeles. This is where she began her important work for the city.

Work as an Architectural Historian

Alma Carlisle worked for the City of Los Angeles. She was an architectural associate for the Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering. Her job was to find and study old buildings. She gathered information to help save these historic places.

Saving Historic Places

Carlisle surveyed 27 neighborhoods in Los Angeles. A survey means she carefully looked at and recorded historic buildings. Her work helped create four Historic Preservation Overlay Zones. These are special areas where old buildings are protected. She also helped name over 50 Historic-Cultural Monuments. These are individual buildings or sites that are very important to the city's history.

Two of the most important surveys she worked on were:

Alma Carlisle retired from the city in 1996. However, she continued her work. In 2001, she joined an architectural company. It was called Myra L. Frank & Associates.
