What is Almdudler?
The original Almdudler is a sweet, fizzy drink made with different herbal extracts. It has a special taste that many people enjoy. About 80 million liters of Almdudler are made every year. That's a lot of soda!
You can find Almdudler in a few different types:
- Original: The classic herbal fizzy drink.
- Light: This version has no sugar.
- Still: This one is not fizzy at all.
- G'spritzt: This means it's mixed with fizzy mineral water.
In Austria, you can also find Almradler, which is Almdudler mixed with beer. People in some parts of Austria also like to mix Almdudler with local red or white wine.
How Almdudler Started
Almdudler was first made in 1957 by an entrepreneur from Vienna named Erwin Klein. He worked on the recipe for three years before it was ready.
The name "Almdudler" comes from an old phrase, auf der Alm dudeln. This means "yodeling in the (alpine) pasture." So, the name reminds people of the beautiful Austrian mountains.
The drink was first created to be a tasty alternative to alcoholic drinks. It could also be used as a mixer for other beverages.
Growing Popularity
Erwin Klein helped Almdudler become very popular through smart advertising. He also sponsored big sports events, like the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck.
Since 1973, the Almdudler company mostly gives licenses to other companies to make and sell the drink. This means other companies produce it, but Almdudler still owns the brand.
Today, Almdudler is bottled in Austria, Germany, Croatia, Belgium, and Switzerland. It is also sold in many other countries, including the Czech Republic, Hungary, Australia, and the United States.
Famous Advertising
Almdudler's advertising has always tried to create a feeling of "home" or "Heimat" for Austrians. This made it stand out from other big, global drinks.
One very famous advertising slogan in Austria is: Wenn de kan Oimdudla haum, geh' i wieda ham! This is in a local Austrian dialect. In English, it means: "If they don't have Almdudler, I'll go back home!" This shows how much people love the drink.
In 2017, for the brand's 60th birthday, an American artist named Mel Ramos created a painting called "Almdudler's Fabulous Blonde." This painting was even shown in the Vienna Museum of Art History.
How Popular is Almdudler?
Almost everyone in Austria (about 99%) knows about Almdudler. In a big study that looked at how people feel about different brands, Almdudler was ranked as the 7th most popular brand in Austria. It was the only Austrian drink brand in the top 10!
As mentioned, over 80 million liters of Almdudler are produced each year. A good portion of this, about 20% in 2014, is sold in other countries around the world.
