Alo Mattiisen (born 22 April 1961 – died 30 May 1996) was a talented Estonian musician and composer. He created many popular songs.

One of his most famous songs was "No land is alone." It was a patriotic song with words by Jüri Leesment. Alo Mattiisen also wrote other important patriotic songs. These songs, like his "Five Patriotic Songs" series, became very popular during the Singing Revolution. This was a time when Estonians peacefully worked for their country's freedom.

Alo Mattiisen's Early Life and Studies

Alo Mattiisen was born in a town called Jõgeva. His father's name was Evald Mattiesen. Alo loved music from a young age.

He studied at the Tallinn State Conservatory. In 1984, he finished his studies in music education. This meant he learned how to teach music to others. Later, in 1988, he graduated again from the same school. This time, he became a specialist in composing music. This meant he was an expert in creating new songs and musical pieces.

Alo Mattiisen's Creative Work

Alo Mattiisen was part of a band called In Spe. In 1983, he joined the group. He took the place of another musician, Erkki-Sven Tüür. Alo Mattiisen's first show with In Spe was in January 1984. He helped create many great songs with the band.

Alo Mattiisen's Personal Life

Alo Mattiisen was married to an actress named Rita Rätsepp. They had one daughter together, Anna-Mariita Mattiisen. Later, they separated. Before he passed away, he was in a relationship with Katri Varbola.

Alo Mattiisen died on 30 May 1996. He was only 35 years old. He passed away in Tallinn, Estonia, due to a heart attack.

Awards and Recognition

Alo Mattiisen received several important awards for his music:

  • In 1988 and 1989, he won the Yearly Culture Award of Music of Estonian SSR.
  • In 1996, he was given the Culture Award of Republic of Estonia. This was a very high honor for his contributions to Estonian culture.
