Aloja is a small town in Latvia. It is located in the Limbaži Municipality in the Vidzeme region. This town is quite close to the border with Estonia.
Aloja was first written about in history books way back in 1449. It started to grow quickly after some big changes in farming laws in Latvia around 1920. In 1925, Aloja officially became a village. It also became an important center for the local area.
A new railway line was built through Aloja in 1936. This line connected Rīga, the capital city, to Rūjiena. This helped Aloja grow even more. In 1992, Aloja was given the special status of a town. For a while, from 2009 to 2021, Aloja was the main administrative center for the larger Aloja Municipality.

Aloja has a long and interesting history. It was first mentioned in written records in 1449. This means people have lived and worked here for over 500 years!
Growth and Development
After 1920, Latvia made some important changes to how land was owned and farmed. These changes helped Aloja grow a lot. More people moved there, and businesses started to appear.
In 1925, Aloja was officially recognized as a village. This was a big step for the community. It meant Aloja was becoming a more important place in the region. It also became the main center for the surrounding area, known as a parish.
The Railway Era
A major event for Aloja happened in 1936. A new railway line was built that went right through the town. This line connected Aloja to bigger cities like Rīga. Railways were very important back then for moving goods and people. This helped Aloja become even more connected and prosperous.
Becoming a Town
Aloja continued to develop over the years. In 1992, it achieved a new milestone: it was officially granted town rights. This is a special status that many settlements aim for. From 2009 to 2021, Aloja also served as the administrative center for the larger Aloja Municipality. This meant important local government offices were located there.
