Alonso José Puerta Gutiérrez (born 1944) is a Spanish politician. He was born on 24 March 1944 in Avilés, a town in Asturias, Spain. Alonso Puerta has held important roles in Spanish and European politics.
He first joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). This is one of Spain's main political parties. In 1977, he was elected to the Spanish Congress of Deputies. This is like the main parliament or law-making body for the whole country. He represented the region of Madrid. From 1977 to 1979, he was also a leader for the PSOE party in the Madrid area.
Later, Alonso Puerta became a member of the Madrid City Council. He was elected in 1979 and served as a municipal councillor until 1981. A municipal councillor helps make decisions for a city, like about local services or city planning. After leaving the PSOE, he joined another political group called United Left.
One of his most significant roles was as a member of the European Parliament. He served there for many years, from 1987 to 2004.
