Journey to the New World
Alonso de Córdoba and his wife arrived in Peru in 1534. Later, in 1540, they traveled to Chile with Pedro de Valdivia. Valdivia was a famous Spanish conqueror who played a big role in founding Chile. Alonso de Córdoba was one of the early Spanish settlers who helped build new cities and organize life in these new lands.
What was an Encomendero?
In the new Spanish colonies, Alonso de Córdoba became an encomendero. This meant he was given the responsibility to look after a group of native people in Santiago, Chile. He was supposed to protect them and teach them about Christianity. In return, the native people would work for him. This system was a way for the Spanish to organize labor and control the land.
Roles in Santiago
Alonso de Córdoba held several important positions in the city of Santiago. He served as a regidor (a city council member) in 1548, 1568, and 1580. This role meant he helped make decisions about how the city was run. He was also the alcalde (mayor) of Santiago in 1559, 1562, and 1581. As mayor, he was in charge of the city's daily operations and justice.
Founding El Quisco
Alonso de Córdoba also bought the rights to a piece of land and started a new Spanish settlement there. This settlement is known today as El Quisco, a coastal town in Chile. Founding new towns was a key part of expanding Spanish control and building new communities in the Americas.
Legacy
Alonso de Córdoba passed away in 1589 in Santiago. Today, an important avenue in Vitacura, a part of Santiago, is named after him. This shows how he is remembered for his contributions to the early history of Chile.
