What Makes Alpine Meadow Special?

Alpine Meadow is a small area that slopes steeply, with both open grassland and some woodland. It's very important because it has a rare type of grassland called unimproved chalk grassland. This means the soil hasn't been changed by farming or chemicals, so it's very natural and full of unique plants.

Plants and Flowers

You can find many different types of grasses here, like upright brome, false brome, and sheep's fescue. The meadow is also famous for its beautiful orchids! Look out for the common twayblade and the common spotted orchid. These delicate flowers add lots of color to the meadow.

Amazing Animals

Alpine Meadow is a great spot for butterflies. You might see the lovely marbled white butterfly fluttering around. Even more exciting, it's one of the few places where you can find the rare Duke of Burgundy butterfly.

The woodland part of the reserve is also home to many birds. Keep an eye out for green woodpeckers and various types of finches singing in the trees.

Visiting Alpine Meadow

Alpine Meadow is always open for visitors. You can get there by following a footpath from Bridle Way. It's a wonderful place to explore and enjoy nature!
