Altar (which is called Wawuk in the O'odham language) is a small city in the Mexican state of Sonora. It is the main town of the Altar Municipality.
Altar is located in the northwest part of Sonora. Its exact location is at 30°42′49″N 111°50′07″W.

In 2010, about 7,927 people lived in Altar. The city was founded a long time ago, in 1775.

Altar is found in the northwest part of the state of Sonora. It is an important stop on Federal Highway 2. This highway connects Mexicali to Hermosillo.
The city is about 420 meters (1,378 feet) above sea level. This means it's quite high up!
