A Look Back: The History of Altenhohenau
The Altenhohenau convent began a long time ago, in the year 1235. It was started by Dominican nuns who came from the city of Nürnberg. The people who helped create this community were Count Konrad von Wasserburg and his wife, Kunigunde. They are known as the founders of Altenhohenau.
Big Changes and Important Books
In 1465, the community at Altenhohenau decided to make some important changes. This was part of a bigger "reform" movement. A reform means making improvements or changes to rules and ways of life. This particular reform started at a convent called Schönensteinback in Alsace.
Ten nuns from Schönensteinback moved to St. Catherine's convent in Nuremberg. Before this reform, the library at St. Catherine's had only about 45 books. After the reform, it grew a lot! It had between 500 and 600 books.
The nuns at St. Catherine's were very helpful. They shared their knowledge and books with other convents. These other convents needed new books for their prayers and to follow the updated rules of the reform. For example, they helped the St. Catherine's convent in St. Gall to copy books. They also gave many books to the convents at Fraenaurach and Altenhohenau. This shows how important books and learning were to these communities.
