Alton C. Parker (born July 3, 1907 – died February 28, 1989) was a very important Canadian police officer. He made history by becoming Canada's first Black Canadian detective. Mr. Parker was from Windsor, Ontario. He joined the Windsor Police Service in 1942. He worked there for 28 years and also helped his community in many ways. Because of his great work, he received several special awards, including the Order of Canada.
Early Life
Alton C. Parker was born in Windsor, Ontario, on July 3, 1907. He lived in Windsor his whole life. Before joining the police, he worked as a mechanic. He was a foreman at a used car dealership. Mr. Parker also led a group called the Central Citizens Association. This group worked to help Black people find jobs in public services in Windsor. He was a very skilled person when he decided to join the police force.
A Special Career
On September 1, 1942, Alton Parker became a constable with the Windsor Police Service. At first, some people were unsure about his joining. But his professional and calm way of working soon won over his fellow officers.
On July 28, 1951, he was promoted to become Canada's first Black detective. This was a big step forward! Mr. Parker was also very active in his community. He helped start a group called Apartment Living for Physically Handicapped Adults (ALPHA). This group helped adults with disabilities find places to live.
In the 1960s, he became a director for Goodwill Industries. This organization helps people find jobs and build skills. He also hosted a fun event for children every year at Broadhead Park. In 1976, that park was renamed in his honor.
Honored for His Work
Alton Parker retired from the police force on December 30, 1970. After his retirement, he received many important honors. In 1976, he was given the Order of Canada. This is one of the highest awards a Canadian citizen can receive. He also received the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship. This award recognizes people who have made a big difference in their communities. He also received the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal.
Alton Parker passed away on February 28, 1989, when he was 81 years old. Many people came to his funeral. So many, in fact, that loudspeakers and radio were used so everyone could hear the speeches. This showed how much he was respected and loved.
