What is a Constable?
Where the Word "Constable" Comes From
The word constable has a very old history! It comes from the Latin words comes stabuli, which means "count of the stables." This title first appeared in the Eastern Roman Empire.
Originally, a constable was the person in charge of a lord's or monarch's horses. Later, this important title was used in the kingdoms of medieval Europe. In many countries, a constable became a very high military rank and an important officer of the state, like the famous Constable of France.
Constables in Modern Times
Today, constables are usually law enforcement officers. Their role can still vary a lot:
- In the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth of Nations, and some European countries, a constable is often the lowest rank of police officer. They are the officers you might see patrolling your streets.
- In the United States, a constable is usually an elected peace officer. They often have fewer powers than a sheriff.
- In the Channel Islands, a constable is an elected official at the local parish level. They help with local community matters.
Constables of Castles
Historically, a constable could also be the person in charge of defending a castle. Even today, there is a special job called the Constable of the Tower of London. This person is responsible for the famous Tower of London.
Similar Job Titles
The word "constable" is similar to "Marshal". The word "marshal" comes from old German words meaning "horse" and "servant." So, it also originally meant "stable keeper," just like constable!
