Alton White was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He was born on May 31, 1945. White played for three seasons in the World Hockey Association. His teams included the New York Raiders, Los Angeles Sharks, and the Michigan Stags/Baltimore Blades.
Alton White's Hockey Journey
Alton White was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is known for being a pioneer in professional ice hockey. White was one of the first players of Black heritage to play in a major league. The first was Willie O'Ree.
Making History in Hockey
White made history in the sport. He was the first Black hockey player to score 20 goals in a single season. This was for a major league team. During the 1972-73 season, he scored 21 goals. He also had 21 assists for the Los Angeles Sharks.
Scoring a Hat-Trick
In that same 1972-73 season, Alton White achieved another first. He became the first Black player to score a hat-trick in a major league game. A hat-trick means scoring three goals in one game. He did this against the Chicago Cougars.
