Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Alura are an Aboriginal Australian people. They come from the Northern Territory in Australia. Like many Aboriginal groups, the Alura have a rich history and deep connection to their traditional lands.

Alura Country

The Alura people lived in a special area of land. This land was about 2,300 square kilometers (which is about 900 square miles). Their country was on the northern side of the lower Victoria River. It stretched east from where the river meets the sea. Their land went towards a place known as Bradshaw. This area was their traditional home for many generations.

How the Alura Organised Themselves

Early researchers studied how different Aboriginal groups lived. One researcher, Robert Hamilton Mathews, learned about the Alura's social system. He noted that the Alura had an "eight-section class system." This system helped organise their society. It decided things like who could marry whom. It also helped people understand their roles in the community. Mathews called this specific type of system Wombya.
