Ama Louisa John (born on May 9, 1998), known as Ama Lou or simply Ama, is an English singer and songwriter. She was born and grew up in London, United Kingdom. Ama learned to sing in a classical style. She started writing her own music when she was 11 years old.
Early Life and Music Beginnings
Ama was born in north London, England. Her father is from Guyana and her mother is English. She loved writing music from a young age. She started taking guitar lessons when she was only seven or eight years old.
When Ama was 13, she wanted to perform her music. She would pretend to be older so she could sing at "open mic nights" in London. These are events where anyone can perform for an audience. Ama listened to many famous singers as she grew up. Some of her favorites were Gil Scott-Heron, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald.
Music Career
Ama released her very first song, called "TBC," in 2016. This was her debut single. In 2018, she went on tour with another singer named Jorja Smith. During this time, she gained a lot of attention.
The famous musician Drake shared lyrics from her song "TBC" on his Instagram. He also said that Ama Lou was a big inspiration for his album, Scorpion.
Ama signed with Interscope Records in late 2019. This is a big record company. She released her first full album, I Came Home Late, in 2023. In 2025, Ama released a new song called "My Girl." This song is from her next album, which does not have a title yet.
