Amage (Ἀμάγη) was a powerful Sarmatian queen who lived around the 2nd century BC. She was married to King Medosacus. They lived near the Black Sea.

Who Was Queen Amage?

Amage was a queen of the Sarmatians. The Sarmatians were an ancient group of people. They lived in parts of what is now Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Amage's husband, King Medosacus, was more interested in luxury than ruling. Because of this, Amage took charge of the kingdom.

Taking Charge of the Kingdom

Queen Amage saw that her husband was not focused on his duties. So, she decided to take over the government. She became a judge for disputes. She also set up defenses to protect her people. She was very good at stopping enemies from invading. Her leadership made her famous across all of Scythia.

A Brave Rescue Mission

Because of Amage's fame, people from the Tauric Chersonesus asked for her help. They were being bothered by a nearby Scythian king. Amage agreed to help them. She wrote to the Scythian king, asking him to stop. But he replied in a disrespectful way.

Amage decided to act. She gathered 120 strong and experienced warriors. Each warrior had three horses. In just one day and one night, they traveled about 185 kilometers. They arrived at the Scythian king's palace by surprise. Amage and her warriors quickly defeated the guards. The Scythian king was caught off guard. He thought Amage's army was much bigger than it was.

Amage personally led the charge. She killed the Scythian king herself. She also dealt with his friends and relatives who supported him. This brave act allowed the people of Chersonesus to get their land back. Amage let the Scythian king's son live. She allowed him to rule his kingdom. But only if he promised not to attack nearby kingdoms again. This event happened near the end of the 2nd century BC.
