Early Life and Learning
Amanda Bresnan grew up in Brisbane, a big city in Australia. She studied at Griffith University. After her studies, she moved to Canberra. In Canberra, she worked on developing important rules and plans for the government and community groups.
She started in the ACT Government's Graduate Program. Later, she became a senior policy officer for ACT Health. This means she helped create plans for health services. She also worked as a policy manager for the Consumers' Health Forum of Australia. Then, she became the director of policy at the Mental Health Council of Australia.
Her Journey in Politics
First Attempts to Join Parliament
Amanda Bresnan first tried to get elected in the 2004 ACT Election. She ran for the Molonglo area as a candidate for the ACT Greens party. She did not win a seat that time. However, another Greens candidate, Deb Foskey, was elected.
In the 2007 Australian federal election, Amanda Bresnan ran for a seat in the House of Representatives. This is part of Australia's national parliament. She represented the Australian Greens for the Canberra area. The Greens party worked hard to get more of their members elected. Even though the Greens gained more votes, they did not win enough seats in the Senate that year.
Winning a Seat in the ACT Assembly
In June 2008, the ACT Greens announced that Amanda Bresnan would run for election again. This time, she ran in the Brindabella area. Before the election, surveys showed that more people were planning to vote for the Greens. Experts thought the Greens might have a lot of power in deciding who would form the government.
After the votes were counted in the 2008 election, the Greens had gained many more votes. This led to Amanda Bresnan winning a seat in the ACT Legislative Assembly. Three other Greens members, Meredith Hunter, Shane Rattenbury, and Caroline Le Couteur, also won seats. In the 2012 election, Amanda Bresnan and most other Greens members were not re-elected. Only Shane Rattenbury kept his seat.
What She Did in Parliament
While Amanda Bresnan was a member of the ACT Legislative Assembly, she worked on many important topics. These included health, mental health, transport, and support for people with disabilities. She also focused on housing, issues for older people, and multicultural affairs. She worked on industrial relations and corrections. She was also the Party Whip for the ACT Greens. This role helps make sure party members vote together on issues.
