In 1523, a Jewish traveler named David Reubeni visited the area. He passed through the land of a king named 'Amara. Most historians believe this was Amara Dunqas. Two years later, an Ottoman admiral named Selman Reis also mentioned Amara. He described Amara's kingdom as very large. It would take three months to cross it. However, Selman Reis also thought the kingdom was not very strong. He believed it could be easily conquered.
