About the Museum
The Amarillo Museum of Art first opened its doors in 1972. A famous architect named Edward Durell Stone designed the building. The museum is also sometimes called the Amarillo Art Center.
Who Owns and Funds It?
The museum building is owned by Amarillo College. It's quite large, about 32,000 square feet! The college helps by paying the director's salary. Other money comes from the Texas Arts Commission and special grants. A special fund was started by Betty Bivins Childers to help build the museum. The museum facilities were named in her honor when they opened.
Programs and Collections
In 2010, the museum received a grant to help with its Art Smart and Art for All program. This program brought art to people living in retirement and care homes.
The museum shows many different kinds of art inside. Sometimes, they even have special days with live music and snacks! One important part of the museum is the Price Gallery of Asian Art. This is a permanent collection with over 300 art pieces from Asia. Dr. and Mrs. William T. Price of Amarillo collected and donated these amazing items. You can also find cool sculptures outside on the museum grounds.
The Amarillo Museum of Art is a member of the Texas Association of Museums. This group helps museums across Texas work together.
