The Amasa Day House is a special old home in the village of Moodus, which is part of East Haddam, Connecticut. It is now a historic house museum. This house was built way back in 1816. This makes it one of the oldest buildings in Moodus. It is also a great example of a building style called Federal architecture.
Today, a group called Connecticut Landmarks takes care of the house. Inside, you can see how the Industrial Revolution changed how American families lived a long time ago. The Amasa Day House is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
History of the Amasa Day House
The Amasa Day House sits in a special spot at the edge of the Moodus village green. It has a big yard, about 3.5 acres, with trees that help hide it from the main road. The house is made of wood and has two and a half stories. It has a pointed roof and its outside walls are covered with wooden boards.
Who Lived Here?
The house was built in 1816 for a farmer named Colonel Julius Chapman. He lived there with his wife, Frances, and their four daughters. After Colonel Chapman passed away, Amasa Day bought the property. Amasa Day was an insurance agent and a banker. He sold off some parts of the land over time.
Later, Amasa Day's daughter, Katherine, and her husband, Eugene Chaffee, inherited the house. Eugene Chaffee worked for the New York Net and Twine Company. This was one of many factories in Moodus that made twine. Their son, Dr. Amasa Day Chaffee, became a famous art photographer.
Visiting the Museum
The Amasa Day House was given to Connecticut Landmarks in 1967. This group helps protect important historical places. You can visit the house for tours during certain times of the year. You usually need to make an appointment to see it.
