Amaury III of Évreux facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Amaury III (died around 1191) was an important leader known as the Count of Évreux. He ruled in a region called Normandy from 1181 until he passed away. He was part of a well-known family called the Montfort family. Sometimes, people also called him Amaury V de Montfort.

Amaury was the oldest son of Simon III. His father was a lord of Montfort-l'Amaury and also the Count of Évreux. Amaury's mother was named Matilda.

When his father Simon died in 1181, their family's lands and titles were split up. Amaury received the county of Évreux. He also got some lands in England. His younger brother, Simon (IV), inherited the Montfort lands in Île-de-France.

Amaury married a woman named Mabel. She was the oldest daughter of William fitz Robert, who was the Earl of Gloucester. Mabel's mother was Hawise de Beaumont. Amaury and Mabel had a son named Amaury IV (VI).

When Mabel's father, William, died in 1183, Amaury had a strong right to become the Earl of Gloucester. However, King Henry II took control of the earldom instead.

Amaury's Death and Legacy

Amaury III died during the Third Crusade. This was a major military journey in the Middle Ages. He likely passed away around 1191.

A record from the Cathedral of Évreux mentions his death. It says he died on March 13, just after his father. The record also notes that he left 40 solidi (a type of money) to the church.

His son, Amaury IV, was still young when his father died. It seems Amaury IV never actually ruled in Évreux. This area was taken over by King Philip II of France in 1199. However, Amaury IV was able to successfully claim the Gloucester title through his mother. This was a title his father, Amaury III, had never managed to get.
