In the 1960s, Ambattur was mostly a quiet village with many farms. The Ambattur Lake was very important then, helping farmers water their crops. The area began to grow much faster when a large industrial area, called the Ambattur Industrial Estate, was built there in 1964. This brought new jobs and more people to the area.
Where the Name Comes From
Some people believe the name Ambattur comes from Tamil words that mean "fifty villages" (ஐம்பத்து ஊர்). This is because the area might have once been a group of 50 smaller places that grew together.
People and Growth
In 2011, about 466,205 people lived in Ambattur. Most adults in the area, around 82%, could read and write. This shows that Ambattur is a well-developed and growing community.
