About Amber Case

Early Life and Education

Amber Case was born in 1986 in Portland, Oregon. She went to Lewis & Clark College and finished her studies in 2008. For her final project, she studied how the new iPhone was changing how people lived.

Starting New Ideas

In 2008, Amber helped start something called CyborgCamp. This was a special kind of meeting where people talked about the future of humans and computers. It was a place for new ideas to grow.

In 2012, she was named a National Geographic Emerging Explorer. This means she was recognized as a bright, new thinker. She also gave a famous TED talk in 2010 called “We Are All Cyborgs Now.”

Building Companies

In 2010, Amber Case and Aaron Parecki started a company called Geoloqi. This company made software that used location information. A bigger company called Esri bought Geoloqi in 2012. Later, in 2015, Amber joined a company called Healthways, where she became a managing director.

We Are All Cyborgs

Amber Case often says that we are all "cyborgs" already. She explains that a cyborg is simply a human who uses technology. This technology doesn't have to be inside our bodies. It can be anything that extends our abilities, like a phone or a computer. She believes that today, we have two versions of ourselves: one in the real world and one in the digital world.

Calm Technology

In recent years, Amber Case has focused on something called Calm technology. This is a type of technology that is designed to help you without constantly needing your attention. It works in the background, letting you focus on your life. Amber describes it as technology that "gets out of your way." She wrote a book about this topic in 2015 called Calm Technology. In 2024, she started the Calm Tech Institute. This institute helps certify devices that are designed to be less distracting.
