The Amberjack Hole is a special underwater cave called a blue hole. It is located about 48 km (30 mi) off the coast of Sarasota, Florida. The top edge of this deep hole is about 34 m (112 ft) below the ocean surface. From there, it goes down even further, reaching a depth of about 72 m (236 ft).

What is a Blue Hole?

A blue hole is a large, deep underwater sinkhole or cave. They are often found in coastal areas. Blue holes get their name because they look like a dark blue circle in the lighter blue ocean water. This is due to their great depth.

These holes formed a long time ago. They were created when sea levels were much lower. Rainwater slowly dissolved the limestone rock, forming caves. When sea levels rose again, these caves became filled with ocean water.

Exploring the Deep

Scientists are very interested in blue holes like Amberjack Hole. They want to learn about the unique life forms that live there. They also study the water and the ground at the bottom.

In 2019, a team of scientists explored Amberjack Hole. They went on two trips, one in May and one in September. The team included experts from several groups. These included Mote Marine Laboratory and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Discoveries in the Deep

During their expeditions, the scientists collected important information. They studied the creatures living in and around the hole. They also checked the ocean water and the mud at the bottom.

One exciting discovery was about nutrients. Scientists found signs that food sources were moving upwards from the bottom of the hole. This means there's a special flow of nutrients helping life survive there.

They also found certain elements called radium and radon. These elements are often found in groundwater. This suggests that Amberjack Hole might be connected to the Floridan aquifer. The Floridan aquifer is a huge underground water source. This connection could mean fresh water flows into the deep parts of the hole.
