Sir Ambrose Joseph McGonigal (born 22 November 1917, died 22 September 1979) was an important judge in Northern Ireland. He was also a brave soldier who received the Military Cross, a special award for courage.
Early Life and Education
Ambrose McGonigal was born in South Dublin, Ireland, in 1917. His father, John McGonigal, was also a judge.
Ambrose went to school at Clongowes Wood College. Later, he studied at Queen's University Belfast.
A Brave Soldier
During the Second World War, Ambrose McGonigal served in the British Army. He was a very brave soldier.
In 1944, he was given the Military Cross. This award is for showing great courage in battle.
A Judge in Northern Ireland
After the war, Ambrose McGonigal became a lawyer in Northern Ireland in 1948. He worked hard and became a High Court judge on 8 March 1968.
In 1975, he was given an even higher position as a Lord Justice of Appeal. This means he was one of the most senior judges. He was also made a knight on 1 July 1975, which means he could use the title "Sir."
During his time as a judge, Northern Ireland faced difficult times. Because of the danger from terrorism, Justice McGonigal sometimes had to carry a gun for his safety. Sadly, several judges in Northern Ireland lost their lives during this period.
Sir Ambrose Joseph McGonigal passed away in 1979 when he was 62 years old.

Sir Ambrose McGonigal's son, Eoin McGonigal, also became a lawyer. He works as a Senior Counsel in Dublin, Ireland.
