Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ambrose Ussher (born around 1582, died 1629) was an important Irish clergyman and scholar. He was a teacher at Trinity College, Dublin and a church leader in the Church of Ireland. He is best known for his work translating the Bible.

Early Life and Education

Ambrose Ussher was born in Dublin, Ireland, around 1582. He was the second surviving son of Arland Ussher and his wife Margaret. His older brother was James Ussher, who later became a famous archbishop. Ambrose may have studied at Cambridge University for a time. He earned his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree and became a fellow, or teacher, at the newly opened Trinity College, Dublin.

A Talented Scholar

Ambrose Ussher became very skilled in ancient languages like Hebrew and Arabic. He even exchanged letters with Henry Briggs, a well-known mathematician. Sadly, his career as a fellow was interrupted because he faced health challenges. He passed away at a young age in Dublin.

Ussher was not married. He was buried on March 4, 1629.

His Writings and Translations

Ambrose Ussher worked on a translation of the Bible from its original Hebrew language. He finished this work before the famous King James Version of the Bible was completed. He hoped that King James I would want many English translations of the Bible. His translation remained as handwritten books, stored in the library at Trinity College, Dublin.

Published and Unpublished Works

The only work Ambrose Ussher ever published was a small book called 'A Brief Catechism very well serving for the Instruction of Youth.' This book was printed in Dublin, but it doesn't have a date on it.

However, he left behind many other handwritten works. There were thirty-four of these manuscripts, which are now kept at Trinity College, Dublin. They included:

  • Volumes of sermons (religious speeches).
  • Notes and explanations about scripture (parts of the Bible).
  • Notes on famous classical writers from ancient Greece and Rome.
  • An 'Arabian Dictionary and Grammar' (a book to help people learn Arabic).
  • A work called 'Of the Kingdom of Great Britain, or a Discourse on the Question of Scotland's Union with England.' This was about the idea of Scotland joining with England.
  • 'The Principles of Religion explained in English, Greek, Latin, and Hebrew.' This showed his knowledge of many languages.
