Amelia's Life Story
Amelia was the only child of Robert Darcy, the 4th Earl of Holderness, and his wife, Mary Doublet. A painting of her was made around 1764 by the artist François-Hubert Drouais.
Her First Marriage and Children
On November 29, 1773, Amelia married Francis Osborne, Marquess of Carmarthen. They were married in London. Together, they had three children:
- Lord George William Frederick Osborne (born 1775 – died 1838). He later became the 6th Duke of Leeds.
- Lady Mary Henrietta Juliana Osborne (born 1776 – died 1862). She married Thomas Pelham, 2nd Earl of Chichester.
- Lord Francis Osborne (born 1777 – died 1850). He later became the 1st Baron Godolphin.
In 1777, Amelia's mother, Lady Holderness, had a disagreement with Amelia. This happened after Amelia and her husband helped a friend of Lord Carmarthen.
Inheriting Special Titles
On May 16, 1778, Amelia inherited several important titles. Since she was her father's only surviving child, she became the 12th Baroness Darcy de Knayth. She also became the 9th Baroness Conyers. These were titles she held "in her own right," meaning she inherited them directly. She also gained the Portuguese title of Countess of Mértola. Her right to the titles of Baron Darcy de Knayth and Baron Conyers was officially confirmed in 1798. This was many years after her death.
Her Second Marriage
In December 1778, Amelia's first marriage ended. She then married Captain John "Mad Jack" Byron. They had three children together:
- Sophia Georgina Byron (born July 1779 – died at two months old).
- An unnamed son (died at birth around 1780 or 1781).
- Augusta Maria Byron (born 1783 – died 1851).
Amelia passed away a year after her last child was born. Her eldest son, George, then inherited her titles. Her second husband, John Byron, later became the father of the famous poet, Lord Byron, with his next wife.
