Augusta Maria Leigh (born Byron; January 26, 1783 – October 12, 1851) was an important figure in the life of the famous poet Lord Byron. She was the only daughter of John "Mad Jack" Byron, who was Lord Byron's father. Her mother was Amelia, who was also known as Lady Conyers.

Early Life

Augusta's mother passed away shortly after Augusta was born. For a few years, Augusta was raised by her grandmother, Lady Holderness. However, her grandmother also died when Augusta was still young. After that, Augusta spent her childhood living with different relatives and friends.

Marriage and Family

Augusta later married her cousin, George Leigh. He was a military officer, a Lieutenant Colonel. They had seven children together. Their children were Georgiana Augusta, Augusta Charlotte, George Henry, Elizabeth Medora, Frederick George, Amelia Marianne, and Henry Francis.

Unfortunately, Augusta's marriage was not a happy one. Her husband faced many financial problems. He ended up leaving his family with many debts.

Augusta and Lord Byron

Augusta's half-brother was the famous poet, George Lord Byron. They did not meet until he was older and attending Harrow School. Even then, they saw each other very rarely at first.

However, starting in 1804, Augusta and Lord Byron began writing letters to each other regularly. She became someone he trusted and confided in, especially when he had disagreements with his mother. Their letters stopped for two years when Byron traveled abroad. They started writing again when Augusta sent him a letter after his mother passed away in 1811.

Because they had not grown up together, they were almost like strangers at first. But they quickly became very close. Augusta's third daughter, born in the spring of 1814, was named Elizabeth Medora Leigh.

Later Life

One of Augusta's daughters, Georgiana, married her cousin, Henry Trevanion, in 1826. They had three daughters. Another of Augusta's daughters, Elizabeth Medora, later married a French soldier.
