What Does the Society Do?
The main goal of the American Beethoven Society is to share Beethoven's music and history. They do this in a few important ways.
The Beethoven Collection
One of their biggest projects is supporting a huge collection of Beethoven materials. This collection is kept at the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies. This center is located at San Jose State University in California. It was the first place in the Western Hemisphere created just for Beethoven studies.
The collection has over 31,000 items! These include:
- Original and early copies of Beethoven's musical scores.
- Some of Beethoven's own handwritten notes, called manuscripts.
- Books about Beethoven.
- Artworks like sculptures and paintings.
- Recordings and videos of his music.
- Other special items related to Beethoven.

Who Was Ira F. Brilliant?
The center is named after Ira F. Brilliant. He was a huge fan of Beethoven's music his whole life. In 1970, he started collecting rare manuscripts and early editions of Beethoven's works. Mr. Brilliant wanted these important items to be available for everyone to study. He worked with San Jose State University to create the special center.
