American Hockey Association facts for kids
Did you know there were two different professional hockey leagues called the American Hockey Association? Even though they had the same name, they existed at very different times and were completely separate organizations. Both were considered "minor pro leagues," which means they were professional leagues where players got paid, but they were not the very top leagues like the NHL.
What Was the American American Hockey Association?
The name "American Hockey Association" was used by two distinct professional ice hockey leagues in North America. These leagues helped develop hockey talent and brought exciting games to fans in different eras.
The First American Hockey Association (1926–1942)
The first league known as the American Hockey Association was a minor professional league that operated for many years. It started in 1926 and continued until 1942. During its time, this league provided a place for many talented hockey players to compete professionally. It was an important part of the hockey world, especially in the Midwest United States, before and during the early years of World War II.
The Second American Hockey Association (1992–1993)
Much later, another professional hockey league also used the name American Hockey Association. This second league was much shorter-lived. It only existed for one season, from 1992 to 1993. Despite its short run, it was another attempt to create a professional hockey league in the United States, showing how popular the sport is and how many different leagues have tried to be part of its history.
