Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The American Horticultural Society (AHS) is a group that helps people learn about and enjoy gardening in America. It's a non-profit organization, which means it uses its money to help its cause, not to make a profit for owners. Their main office is at a place called River Farm in Alexandria, Virginia.

History of the AHS

The AHS started a long time ago, in 1922. It's one of the oldest groups in the United States that focuses on gardening! It was formed when three different gardening groups decided to join together.

The American Horticultural Society holds many events every year. These events teach and inspire people who love gardening. Each summer, they have a special meeting called the National Children and Youth Garden Symposium. This is where teachers and garden designers share ideas. They talk about how to get kids excited about nature and gardening. The AHS also has an internship program. This program helps young people learn about writing, working with members, and horticulture. Horticulture is the science of growing plants.

Special Awards

The AHS gives out awards to celebrate amazing work in gardening. The Great American Gardeners Awards honor people who are heroes in horticulture. The AHS Book Awards celebrate great books about gardening. The Growing Good Kids Awards recognize excellent books for children about gardening and nature.

Becoming a Member

If you love gardening, you can become a member of the AHS! Members get a magazine called The American Gardener. They also get free or cheaper entry to over 300 gardens and arboretums. An arboretum is like a garden, but for trees. Members also get discounts on flower shows and special programs. They can also join the annual Seed Exchange.

River Farm Headquarters

In 1973, the AHS moved its main office to River Farm. This beautiful property overlooks the Potomac River in Alexandria, Virginia. A kind person named Enid Annenberg Haupt gave the property to the AHS. She wanted this historic place to be open for everyone to enjoy. It was once part of George Washington's large estate.

River Farm has many different gardens. These include a large meadow and a Children's Garden. Many fun events happen at River Farm each year. There's a Spring Garden Market where you can buy plants. There are also garden workshops for kids. The AHS also holds a banquet for its award winners.

In September 2020, the AHS Board of Directors decided to sell River Farm. This decision caused some discussion within the organization. Local government also showed concern. The AHS had planned to sell the property by Spring 2021, but this did not happen.

Working with Partners

The AHS works with other groups and companies. These partnerships help the Society reach its goal. Their goal is to help more people across the country become gardeners. For example, in August 2020, the AHS worked with Elodie's Naturals. They taught people about making skincare products from plants.
