The American Vegetarian Party was a political group in the United States. It was formed on July 28, 1947. This happened at the Commodore Hotel in New York City, New York. About 500 people started the party. These people were attending a meeting of the American Naturopathic Association. The party wanted to promote vegetarianism. They also wanted to run candidates for president. They nominated people for President and Vice-President in several elections. However, they never became a major political party. They did not try hard to get on election ballots. They also did not get official recognition from election officials.

- John Maxwell was chosen as the presidential candidate. He was born in England. This meant he could not be president of the U.S.

- Daniel J. Murphy became the presidential candidate.
- Originally, Herbert C. Holdridge was chosen. But he decided to step down in October. Daniel J. Murphy took his place.
- Symon Gould was again the vice-presidential candidate.

- Herbert M. Shelton was the presidential candidate.

- Symon Gould was nominated for president. However, he passed away in 1963.
