The Styrax americanus, also known as the American snowbell or mock-orange, is a beautiful plant found in the southeastern United States. It grows naturally from Texas and Florida all the way up to Virginia and Missouri. You can often find this plant in wet places like swamps and areas near rivers that sometimes flood.
About the American Snowbell
The American snowbell is usually a shrub, which is like a big bush, but it can also grow into a small tree. It can reach a height of about 5 meters (17 feet). Its leaves are shaped like an oval or egg, and they can be up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) long.
The flowers of the American snowbell grow where the leaves meet the stem. These flowers are quite pretty and give the plant its "snowbell" name.
Types of American Snowbell
There are two main types, or varieties, of the American snowbell:
- American snowbell (Styrax americanus var. americanus): This type is common in swampy forests and other wet areas. You can find it from West Virginia south to Florida, and west to Texas and Missouri.
- Downy American snowbell (Styrax americanus var. pulverulentus): This variety prefers wet pine flatwoods. Its range stretches from South Carolina south to Florida, and west to Texas and Missouri.
