The Story of Amoroso's Bakery
Starting Small: The Early Years
Amoroso's Baking Company began in 1904. It was started by Vincenzo Amoroso and his two sons, Salvatore and Joseph. They first opened their bakery in Camden, New Jersey.
The company quickly grew too big for its first location. So, in 1914, they moved to a new, larger building. This new home was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Haverford Avenue.
During the Great Depression, a very tough economic time, Amoroso's kept doing well. They delivered bread and rolls to homes twice a day. This helped many families get fresh bread even when times were hard.
Growing and Expanding
In 1934, Salvatore Amoroso took over running the company. His sons, Daniel, Vincent, Leonard, and Sal Jr., helped him. The family worked together to make the bakery even more successful.
In 1952, Amoroso's started selling their special "Hearth Baked" bread and rolls. They sold them to A&P Supermarkets in West Philadelphia. Many people loved these new products.
Because more and more people wanted their bread, Amoroso's needed to expand again. In 1960, they moved to an even bigger facility on South 55th Street.
Amoroso's Today
Today, Amoroso's Baking Company has grown a lot. They have expanded their bakery four times since 1960. More than 400 people now work for the company.
You can find Amoroso's baked goods in over 36 states across the country! The Amoroso family still owns and manages the company. It remains one of the most important bakeries in the Philadelphia area.
In 2015, Amoroso's moved its main operations again. They left West Philadelphia and are now located in Bellmawr, New Jersey.
