Amsterdam is a small, unincorporated community located in Merced County, California. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. It sits about 6.5 miles (10.5 km) north-northeast of Atwater. Amsterdam is about 220 feet (67 meters) above sea level.

About Amsterdam, California
Amsterdam was first settled by people who came from the Netherlands, also known as Dutch immigrants. They brought their culture and named the community after the famous city of Amsterdam in their home country.
Early History
In the past, Amsterdam had a train station. This station was part of the Southern Pacific Railroad line that went to Oakdale. However, this train line was no longer used after 1942. In 1925, records show that Amsterdam had a population of 32 people.
The Post Office
Amsterdam also had its own post office at different times. It first operated from 1893 to 1895. Then, it reopened from 1900 to 1910, though it was closed for part of 1906. Finally, the post office was open from 1912 until 1925.
Featured in a Documentary
In 2012, Amsterdam, California, was featured in a Belgian documentary. The film was called Amsterdam Stories USA. It explored different places across the United States that were named Amsterdam.
