Amsterdam, Texas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Amsterdam is a small, unincorporated community located in Brazoria County, Texas, in the United States. It's about 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of a town called Angleton. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.

Amsterdam's Past

Amsterdam once had a post office that served the community from 1897 to 1905. Back in the 1890s, the town was important for shipping cotton from nearby farms to Galveston, a big port city. Boats traveling on Chocolate Bayou were key for moving goods.

Around 1900, Amsterdam was at its busiest. It even had a hotel and a school! However, a very powerful storm, the Galveston hurricane of 1900, caused a lot of damage. After this big storm, the community found it hard to grow.

By 1936, state maps showed only a few houses scattered around the area. Later, in the 1970s, more people started living there because a chemical plant was built nearby. By 1988, maps showed several buildings. Amsterdam also had a fire station, but it closed in the mid-1990s due to a lack of money and volunteers. In the year 2000, about 193 people lived in Amsterdam.
