Amy Shell-Gellasch earned her advanced degree, called a doctorate (D.A.), in 2000. She studied at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her main project for this degree later became her book about Mina Rees.

Today, she is a professor of mathematics. She teaches at Montgomery College in Maryland. She has also worked as an archivist for the Canadian Society for History and Philosophy of Mathematics. An archivist helps to organize and preserve historical documents.
