Amygdaloideae is a group of flowering plants. It is a subfamily within the larger Rosaceae family. You might know the Rosaceae family better as the "rose family."
What Are Amygdaloideae?
The Amygdaloideae subfamily includes many plants we use every day. These plants are known for their beautiful flowers and tasty fruits. They are an important part of nature and our food supply.
A Big Family Change
Before 2011, the Amygdaloideae subfamily was much smaller. It only included plants that grow "stone fruits." These are fruits with a hard pit or stone inside, like plums, peaches, and almonds.
However, scientists made a big change in 2011. They decided to include almost all plants from the Rosaceae family in Amygdaloideae. Only two small subfamilies, Rosoideae and Dryadoideae, were left out. This means the Amygdaloideae group is now much larger and more diverse.
Important Plants in This Group
Many plants in the Amygdaloideae subfamily are very important to people. They provide us with food and beauty. Some well-known members include:
- Plums: Sweet and juicy fruits.
- Apples: One of the most popular fruits worldwide.
- Spiraea: A type of shrub with lovely clusters of flowers.
- Cherries: Small, round fruits, often sweet or tart.
- Medlars: Fruits that are eaten when very ripe and soft.
This subfamily also includes many other fruit trees and ornamental plants. They add a lot to our gardens and dinner tables.
