Ana María Briones Alonso (born in 1972) is a Spanish scientist. She works in the field of medicine. Her research focuses on understanding what causes heart and blood vessel problems. She also studies high blood pressure, which is called arterial hypertension.
Life and Research Work
Ana Briones was born in Madrid, Spain. She later became a researcher at the Autonomous University of Madrid. There, she works in the pharmacology and therapeutics department. Pharmacology is the study of how medicines work. Therapeutics is about how to treat diseases.
She helps test medicines to see how well they work. Her goal is to find new and better ways to treat heart and blood vessel conditions. She is part of a research team led by Doctor Mercedes Salaices. This team studies how blood vessels work and how they are affected by diseases.
Her group looks into two main areas:
- How oxidative stress (a type of cell damage) and certain body chemicals affect blood vessels. They study how these things change in heart and blood vessel diseases.
- How body fat (adipose tissue) affects blood vessels. They want to know how fat can lead to problems in the heart and blood vessels.
Awards and Recognition
In November 2010, Ana Briones received an important award. It was the L'Oréal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science. Four other scientists also received this award with her. They were Isabel Lastres Becker, Elena Ramírez Parra, Mercedes Vila, and María Antonia Herrero.
Each scientist received €15,000. This award is given to women scientists under 40 years old. It helps support their important work in science. The award encourages more women to pursue careers in scientific research.
