Ana María Rodríguez's Early Life and Studies
Ana María Rodríguez was born on February 27, 1958, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She grew up in Caracas, Venezuela. She loved learning and earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Simón Bolívar University in 1979. She continued her studies, getting a master's degree and a Ph.D. in biology and immunology from the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research. In 1987, she moved to the United States. There, she did more advanced research at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.
Ana María Rodríguez's Writing Career
After finishing her education, Ana María Rodríguez taught students at universities. She also volunteered at the Boston Museum of Science, helping with a program called SCIENCE-BY-MAIL for children. In 1995, she started taking special courses to learn how to write for children. By 1999, she decided to become a full-time writer. Her very first article for kids, "The Kids Who Fought Smallpox," was published in Highlights for Children magazine in May 2000. She used her pen name, Mariana Relós, for this article, and it even won an award!
In 2001, she completed another writing course. By 2003, she became a teacher at the Institute of Children's Literature, helping other aspiring writers. That same year, she published her first book for children, called Fires.
