About Ana Pontón
Early Life and Education
Ana Pontón was born in a small village called Chorrente, near Sarria in the Province of Lugo, Spain. She grew up in a house that her great-grandfather built many years ago.
She studied Political Sciences at the University of Santiago de Compostela. This education helped her understand how governments work and how to make changes in society.
Her Political Journey
Ana Pontón began her journey in politics when she was first elected to the Parliament of Galicia in 2004. This is like being elected to a state or regional assembly, where laws are made.
In February 2016, she became the national spokesperson for the BNG party. She received a lot of support, with 85% of the votes. This was a big moment because she was the first woman to hold this important position in the party.
Leading the Opposition
In the regional elections held in July 2020, the BNG party saw a huge increase in support. Their share of votes jumped from 8.3% to 23.7%. This also meant they gained many more seats in Parliament, going from six to a record 19.
Because of this success, the BNG became the second-largest party in the Parliament. Ana Pontón then became the Leader of the Opposition. This role means she leads the main party that challenges the government's decisions and offers different ideas.
The BNG continued to grow under Ana Pontón's leadership in the 2024 elections. They achieved their best-ever result, winning 25 seats and 31.5% of the vote. Even though they didn't form the government, it was a historic achievement for the party. The BNG even became the most voted party in Vigo, which is one of Galicia's largest cities.
Personal Life
In January 2020, Ana Pontón welcomed her first daughter. She gave birth in Santiago de Compostela, a major city in Galicia.
