Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lugo is a province in northwestern Spain. It is located in the northeastern part of Galicia, which is one of Spain's special regions called an autonomous community.

Lugo shares its borders with several other areas. To the south, it is next to the provinces of Ourense and Pontevedra. To the west, it borders A Coruña. To the east, you'll find the principality of Asturias and the province of León. In the north, Lugo meets the Cantabrian Sea, which is part of the Bay of Biscay.

In 2006, about 356,595 people lived in Lugo province. About a quarter of these people, which is around 89,000, live in the main city, also called Lugo. This capital city has a very old history. It was first a settlement built by the Celts, an ancient European people. They named it after their god Lugh. Later, the Romans arrived and changed its name to Lucus Augusti. This city became one of the three most important Roman centers in the Galicia region. The other two were Braccara Augusta (now Braga in Portugal) and Asturica Augusta (now Astorga in Spain). The province of Lugo is divided into 67 smaller areas called municipalities.
