She has been a member of the Parliament of Galicia since 2004. In 2016, she made history as the first woman to become the main spokesperson for the BNG party. Since the 2020 election, she has been the leader of the opposition. This means her party is the main group against the ruling People's Party government in Galicia. Under her leadership, the BNG achieved its best election results ever in 2024.
About Ana Pontón
Ana Pontón was born in a small village called Chorrente, near Sarria. This village is in the Province of Lugo. She grew up in a house built by her great-grandfather. She studied Political Sciences at the University of Santiago de Compostela. This means she learned about how governments work and how people make decisions together.
Her Political Journey
Ana Pontón was first chosen to be a member of the Parliament of Galicia in 2004. This is like being a representative for the people in the region.
In February 2016, she became the national spokesperson for her party, the BNG. She received 85% of the votes for this role. This was a big moment because she was the first woman to hold this important position in the party.
Leading the Opposition
In the July 2020 elections in Galicia, the BNG party did very well under Ana Pontón's leadership. Their share of votes went from 8.3% to 23.7%. The number of seats they had in Parliament also increased from six to a record 19.
Because of this success, the BNG became the second-largest party in the Parliament. The People's Party of regional president Alberto Núñez Feijóo was the largest. This made Ana Pontón the Leader of the Opposition. This means she leads the main group that challenges the government's decisions.
In the 2024 elections, the BNG had its best results ever with Ana Pontón as leader. They won 25 deputies and 31.5% of the votes. Even with this great result, the People's Party still won enough votes to form a majority government. The BNG became the most voted party in the big city of Vigo. This was one of the best results for any left-leaning party in Galicia's history.
Personal Life
In January 2020, Ana Pontón became a mother. She gave birth to her first daughter in Santiago de Compostela.
