Ana Vilma Albanez de Escobar (born 2 March 1954) is a Salvadoran politician. She made history as the first woman to serve as Vice President of El Salvador. She held this important role from June 1, 2004, to June 1, 2009. Ana Vilma de Escobar is a member of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) political party.
She was elected alongside Elías Antonio Saca in 2004. Their victory was a big moment for El Salvador. It was the election with the most voters ever in the country's history. Their party, ARENA, won with a large majority of the votes. Later, in 2008, she tried to become a candidate for president. However, she was not chosen by her party.
Learning and Early Work
Ana Vilma de Escobar studied economics at the "José Simeón Cañas" Central American University. She also has experience teaching math and languages. She is very good at speaking both English and French.
For ten years, she worked for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). In this role, she helped manage projects. These projects aimed to help businesses grow and bring in money from other countries. She worked with both private companies and government groups.
Her involvement in Salvadoran politics started early. She was an executive director for the ARENA political party. She also led the women's section of the party. In 2003, she ran for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador.
Helping El Salvador Grow
As Vice President, Ana Vilma de Escobar had important jobs. She worked to create new jobs for people in El Salvador. She also helped bring in money from foreign companies. She did this through special agencies like PROESA and EXPORTA. These agencies help promote exports and attract investments.
She became the President of the National Agency for the Promotion of Exports. During her time, she created a plan called the National Export Strategy. This plan helped guide how El Salvador would sell its products to other countries. She also worked to bring in investments for industries like textiles and clothing. She also focused on attracting businesses in the services sector. This included call centers and logistics companies.
Ana Vilma de Escobar also worked on a plan to make El Salvador a major hub in the region. This meant modernizing the country. Her goal was to make it a central point for trade and business.
She also led the National Commission for Sustainable Development (CNDS). This group works with the United Nations Development Programme. They also partner with other international groups. Their goal is to carry out important social programs across the country.
Running for the Assembly
In 2011, Ana Vilma de Escobar decided to run for the Legislative Assembly again. She wanted to represent the San Salvador area. She ran as a candidate for the ARENA party.
There were some new rules for these elections. For example, the ballot showed pictures of the candidates. In December 2011, Ana Vilma started a campaign called "Defend your vote." Her main promise was to work for the country's growth in all areas.
On March 11, 2012, the elections were held. After all the votes were counted, it was announced that Ana Vilma de Escobar received many votes. She got 135,015 votes. This made her the ARENA candidate in San Salvador with the most votes. She served as a deputy for San Salvador from 2012 to 2015.
