Ana Vilma Albanez de Escobar, born on March 2, 1954, is a politician from El Salvador. She made history by becoming the first woman to serve as Vice President of El Salvador. She held this important position from June 1, 2004, to June 1, 2009.
She is a member of a political group called the Nationalist Republican Alliance, often known as ARENA. She was chosen as the Vice President alongside Elías Antonio Saca, who became President. Their team won the election with a large number of votes, showing strong support from the people of El Salvador.
Education and Early Career
Ana Vilma de Escobar studied economics at the "José Simeón Cañas" Central American University. She also has experience teaching subjects like math and languages. She is very good at speaking both English and French.
For ten years, she worked for the United States Agency for International Development. In this role, she helped manage projects that aimed to boost exports from El Salvador. She also worked to encourage foreign companies to invest in the country. This helped create more jobs and opportunities.
She also became involved in Salvadoran politics. She served as an executive director for the ARENA political party. She also led the Women's Sector within the party. In 2003, she ran for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador, which is like the country's parliament.
Working in Government
As Vice President, Ana Vilma de Escobar had a key role in creating jobs. She led efforts through special agencies like PROESA and EXPORTA. These agencies work to attract investments from other countries and promote Salvadoran products for export. She was also chosen to be the President of the National Agency for the Promotion of Exports.
During her time in government, she helped create a plan to increase exports until 2016. She also worked to bring in investments for the textile industry. Another important goal was to attract businesses in the services sector, especially for call centers and logistics.
She also developed a plan to make El Salvador a major center for business in the region. This plan aimed to modernize the country and improve its economy.
Additionally, de Escobar was the president of the National Commission for Sustainable Development (CNDS). This group works with the United Nations Development Programme and other organizations. They help carry out national social programs that benefit the people of El Salvador.
Becoming a Legislator
In 2011, Ana Vilma de Escobar decided to run for the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador again. This time, she was a candidate for the San Salvador department, representing the ARENA party.
The election rules had changed, and for the first time, the ballot showed pictures of the candidates. In December 2011, Ana Vilma started a campaign called "Defend your vote." Her main promise was to work for the country's growth in all areas.
On March 11, 2012, the elections took place. After the votes were counted by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, it was announced that Ana Vilma de Escobar received 135,015 votes. This made her the ARENA candidate in San Salvador with the most votes. She served as a deputy for San Salvador in the Salvadoran parliament from 2012 to 2015.
