The Australasian Duskhawker (Anaciaeschna jaspidea) is a type of dragonfly. It belongs to the Aeshnidae family, which includes many large dragonflies. People also call it the Rusty Darner. You can find this dragonfly in many places. Its home ranges from India all the way through Australia to the Pacific Ocean.

What Does It Look Like?

This is a large dragonfly. It has a brown body and pretty blue eyes. Its middle part, called the thorax, is reddish-brown. On each side of the thorax, there are two wide stripes that are greenish-yellow.

Its wings are clear, like glass. They have a small, reddish-brown spot near the tip called a pterostigma. This spot helps the dragonfly fly.

The long tail part, called the abdomen, is reddish-brown. It has cool markings in azure-blue, white, and yellow.

  • The first part of the abdomen has a big, light yellow spot on each side.
  • The second part has white marks on its sides. It also has azure-blue on its top, with a reddish-brown spot in the middle.
  • Parts 3 to 7 are brown on top. They have black rings at their ends.
  • Parts 8 to 10 are darker on top. They have two small spots at their ends.
  • The parts at the very end of its tail are dark reddish-brown.

Female Australasian Duskhawkers look very much like the males.

Where Does It Live and When Does It Fly?

This dragonfly is a crepuscular species. This means it flies mostly during dawn (early morning) and dusk (early evening). It is common in wet, marshy areas. These marshes are usually surrounded by trees or woods. This is where the dragonflies lay their eggs and where their young grow up.

Important Note

The Australasian Duskhawker (Anaciaeschna jaspidea) has a name that sounds a bit like another dragonfly. That other one is the Australian Duskhawker (Austrogynacantha heterogena). Even though their names are similar, they are two different types of dragonflies. Both belong to the Aeshnidae family, but they are not the same species.
