What Does the Astelia Weevil Look Like?
This weevil has a reddish-brown body. It also has shiny black parts on its mouth (called mandibles), its hard wing covers (elytra), its middle body section (thorax), and the end of its snout (rostrum). The sides and back of its wing covers are a lighter color.
Body Parts Explained
- Mandibles: These are the weevil's strong jaws, used for chewing its food.
- Elytra: These are the hard, protective outer wings that cover the weevil's softer flying wings (though this weevil can't fly!).
- Thorax: This is the middle part of the weevil's body, where its legs are attached.
- Rostrum: This is the weevil's long snout, which it uses to feed on plants.
Where Does the Astelia Weevil Live?
The astelia weevil lives in high, mountainous areas of both the North Island and South Island of New Zealand. These "alpine" areas are usually cold and windy, with special plants that can survive in tough conditions.
Specific Locations
- In the North Island, you can find them in the Tararua Range.
- In the South Island, they live on Mount Arthur.
These weevils are a special part of New Zealand's unique wildlife.
