Anastasia Volkova's Journey

Anastasia started her university studies in Kyiv, Ukraine. Then, she went to Poland to get her master's degree. She moved to Australia and studied at the University of Sydney. She earned her PhD there in 2018.

Starting Flurosat

Anastasia started her own company called Flurosat. This company looks at pictures from satellites. It then gives advice to farmers about their crops. In 2017, she asked for money to start her company. She received one million Australian dollars. By 2019, her company had raised over $8 million. A big part of this money came from a group led by Microsoft. In 2018, her company bought another Australian company. This company, Production Wise, had ten years of experience helping farmers.

How Flurosat Helps Farmers

Anastasia's godparent was a farmer. This made her realize she could use her skills to help crops grow better. When plants get sick, they focus on fighting the sickness. This stops them from growing normally. Anastasia's special computer program finds these changes. It compares new satellite pictures of a farm with older, healthy pictures. This helps farmers know if their plants are sick. They can then help the plants get better.

Her PhD was about using smart drones that fly by themselves. She was asked how this technology could help farms. Her answer to this question led to her creating the Flurosat company. Anastasia also shared her ideas at a TEDx event in Sydney.
