Anatoly Mikhailovich Styopin (also known as Stepin) was a brilliant mathematician from Russia. He was born in Moscow on July 20, 1940, and passed away on November 7, 2020. He was an expert in special areas of math called dynamical systems and ergodic theory. These fields help us understand how things change over time.

Studying and Teaching Math

Anatoly Styopin loved learning about math. He studied at Moscow State University, which is a very famous school. In 1965, he finished his first degree there.

Becoming a Doctor of Math

Later, in 1968, he earned his Ph.D. This is a high degree for experts in a field. His main teacher was Felix Berezin. Anatoly Styopin wrote a special paper for his Ph.D. about how to understand changing systems in math.

He earned an even higher degree in 1986, called a Russian doctorate (Doctor Nauk). This showed he was a top expert in his field.

Sharing His Knowledge

Anatoly Styopin was so good at math that he was asked to speak at a big meeting for mathematicians in France in 1970. This meeting was called the ICM.

In 1993, he became a Professor in Mathematics. This meant he could teach at a high level. He taught at Moscow State University, where he had studied. He taught about how functions and numbers work. In 2009, he was given the special title of Honorary Professor. This showed how much the university respected him.

Many students learned from Professor Styopin. Some of his most famous students were Rostislav Grigorchuk and Yiangdong Ye.

Awards and Honors

Anatoly Styopin received important awards for his work in mathematics.

  • Kolmogorov Prize: In 2009, he won this prize with two other mathematicians, Boris Markovich Gurevich and Valery Iustinovich Oseledets. They won it for their work in ergodic theory, which is about patterns in systems that change over time.
  • Award of the Moscow Mathematical Society: He also received an award from the main math group in Moscow.
